I just wanted to do a quick update before heading to Dublin. Ohboyohboy, o boi! I'm super stoked. I will have tons of pictures and stories to share with everyone when I get back. I hope you're as excited as I am.
In the four days since my last big update, it now gets dark before 5pm. I'm gonna go crazy with over 12 hours of darkness. Luckily it's been super sunny and nice the past few days - the plan is to enjoy it as long as possible before the rain turns into sleet which will turn into snow. Though, I'm secretly hoping for lots of snow so we can build snow forts and have snow ball fights and build lots of snow people. I think that would be tons of fun, even if snow can be a big pain in the booty. In other news: we got our first frost the other day! I took a picture with my mobile on the way to the gym.
It was super pretty! Two days in a row it's gotten below freezing. Goodbye Autumn. Hello Winter.
Back on the topic of darkness: despite the early sunset, I had a really cool view from my window on Saturday of the Big Dipper! It was super low on the horizon and was just above the buildings behind my house - I had never seen it so close before! I suppose it helps that there aren't tall buildings and trees in the way here in Belfast, unlike in KC where the sky is blocked by a something or other. My night-sky photography skills aren't quite where I would like them to be, but I'm still learning technique. I'm rather proud of my image, even if it isn't the best out there.
Friday, Kristy and I went out bowling. We were supposed to go out with more folk, but they all bailed on us! How lame - though, we did find out that it takes us at least three games to warm up, otherwise we just fail at bowling. Kristy totally beat me in the first two games; I was slightly embarrassed at my terrible bowling prowess. But I got her in the last game. Take that! Ha! The alley reminds me a lot of Lucky Strike back in the States. They highly recommend booking ahead of time and it seems really popular. Probably, that's due to the fact that it's the only place to going bowling in town. Anyway, we had a really good time! It's definitely going to be something that will be done often.
Saturday and Sunday were homework days - I had to transcribe two medieval documents from photocopies. Both are written in Gothic cursive, which by the way, is incredibly hard to read at first glance. However! That said, it is satisfying in the best way possible once you get through a whole document. My brain wanted to explode, but it was so awesome to actually get through it. I took a photo of my process to show friends, so now I'll show you too. I know you're super jelly of my awesome medieval historian skillz.
I used green to highlight words that I couldn't read immediately. The color helped to clarify letter forms. Pink was for shorthand/abbreviations and numbers. This is a late 15th Century land grant in Old English.
I had to take a break during this process and ended up walking around the immediate neighborhood - I found lots of clubs/pubs with a two-block radius. A friend said: "Wow, Tanith. You know where all the cool places are." Thanks, walking out of ohgodmybrainiskillingmeritenao! I've been getting into mobile phone photography lately and I took a few shots. The lighting was really nice. The sun was low enough on the horizon to hide behind buildings, not a cloud in the sky, and ohidk it was just nice. Here's my favorite pic from that afternoon walk:
And that brings us to now. We have reading week for Week 7 of school, so I'm taking advantage of the time off to visit Ireland some more. Er, well, at least Dublin. Once I get back, I gotta get cracking on some research/reading for my essay due at the end of the month. Should be exciting (maybe. I feel a bit skeptical about that.).
Until the next time!
