2011/10/13 - Quick Update

Half-way quick. Almost quick...?

I just made myself some hot cocoa - got the correct recipe from my dad today. I really botched it the last time I tried my hand at this. It smelled and looked right but tasted awful. My face felt droopy and sad after that attempt. However! I now know the trick to making delish and fresh hot chocolate. As I drink my cup of yummy and listen to the incredibly rare sound of sirens, I find myself enjoying my very day. Today is gorgeous - the sun is out and it's decently cool. Very... hmm, autumn. I'm happy that it isn't raining. Gruh. I suppose that I'll have to get used to the wet weather, but, in reality, I'm gonna complain about it as long as I'm in the UK. I miss my sunlight, damnit!

Clouds and rain just make me lazy. I want to curl up into a ball of blankets and pjs, never get out of bed and sleep all day long. I was talking with one of my professors, Dr. O'Sullivan, about the daylight/weather patterns here in N. Ireland. She was telling me that at peak times during the year that the day can be as long as eighteen hours and as short as six or seven hours. Summertime will be super nice. Sun stays up until 11pm or so and rises around 430am. Snap. <3 Gotta get ready for the days ahead! Temperature wise, it's been very stead at 13-16 degrees Celsius (or 55-60 degrees Fahrenheit for you Americans, haha <3). The other day, saw my breath while the humidity levels made it feel very warm. So weird.

But I think that's enough about the weather. I could talk about it all day, really. Either I'm A) obsessed with it, or B) I have nothing better to talk about. Which is untrue. This week has been lots of fun. Last Friday (the 7th), we had our first flat night out! It started as a "girls' night," but quickly became a flat night. We ordered pizza and ate lots of sweets while having a few drinks before painting the town red. It was so much fun! And junk-foodlicious. I'm glad that I live with people who like to take photos while going out - I'm too busy having fun with everyone to be bothered with taking photos. Ironic for someone who does photography as a major hobby... Here are a couple photos from that night (edited by me, but taken by my flatmates. 'Cause they are super awesome.)

At the house before getting ready and heading out. You can see our lovely mess of delicious food. <3
And our "girl" poses. 'Cause, you know, all girls pose like that.

Saturday was a ton of fun too. I did some grown-up chores like grocery shopping during the day and went with Eileen, Lige, Katie, and Natasha to the South Belfast Festival. They had art and live music! It was awesome. The two bands that we heard played a lot of blues-rock; my toes were definitely tapping away. We even had a picnic~! Shame it was wet and cold, but still, I had a lot of fun.

Here's the last band that played. : )

Sunday, the Fun Fair was in town! I went with my Thai friends (Natasha, Nat and Nam). It was one of the nicest carnivals I've ever been to. The rides were clean and didn't make those horrible "I'm probably gonna break while you're enjoying this crazy thrill!" sounds. It was a lovely experience compared to my other travelling carnival visits back in the States. I went on all the rides - my friends were surprised and in awe of my "iron stomach" as they called it. One ride and they got motion sick while I pointed to the next ride. "That one next plz!" hahaha <3 It was so much fun. Definitely earns its name. We spent the entire afternoon and early evening there.

This week in classes ('cause I do go to those too, promise!), I learned how to use the library and different databases for research. It was a nice reminder since I haven't actually used any resources since I graduated [basically] two years ago. But boy, was it boring. I'm glad I sat in front, otherwise I might have taken a two hour nap. But! I got a free pen out of it. It says JSTOR on it. And it writes smoothly. It's a very nice pen. <3 Medieval skills went well - we learned to read Carolingian script and got the first three of nine passages we could possibly transcribe for our test in December.

After that class, I met up with my tutorial group for Friday's class (the 14th). We have to present/answer a question on Marxism history to everyone. It's 10-15 minutes long; we met to figure out the details of our argument and arrangement of the presentation. I need to finish a few details on that before bed tonight. : ) And tomorrow is Cake Club! How awesome is that? Eat cake and talk with fellow post-grads.

Who knew grad school could be so fun? <3
